Lot 352
KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.15 g, 5 h), Amphipolis, struck under Antipater, circa 322-320. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞAN-Δ-POY BAΣIΛEΩΣ Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; in field to left, quiver. Price 110. An attractive example with an unusual reverse legend arrangement. The obverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, very fine.

An interesting minor detail about this coin is the arrangement of the reverse legend, which starts with the king's name and ends with his title. In addition, the die cutter squeezed in the Δ from AΛEΞANΔPOY between the head of Zeus and the upper part of the scepter, thus giving it the appearance of an artist's signature
